The West Mill wedding photography
Derby’s newest and super-cool wedding venue, The West Mill and it’s awesome for photography. As a result, I think this has become one of our favourite wedding venues in Derbyshire. Set in the middle of Darley Abbey Mills, Derbyshire, this recently converted mill is one of the more trendy venues in the area. Its one of those wedding venues that allow us to be a really creative wedding photographer. Just what we love.
Wedding Venue History
A Grade I Listed, former industrial mill dating back to the early 1800’s. Originally built as a cotton spinning mill, the building played an important part in local history and the industrial revolution. Having been empty and derelict for some time, the four-storey building has been lovingly restored back to life. The mill’s renovation has retained all of the industrial architecture of the 1800’s. For example, it’s filled with lots of scaffold boards hand crafted into furniture. There are Chesterfield sofas everywhere, urban pipework on show, this place looks amazing. Complimenting the industral style, there are also a stack of awesome light fittings throughout the building.
We should definatly mention the original windows on three sides. Therefore creating beautiful pockets of artificial and natural light everywhere. This means that of course, it’s a photographers dream! If you’re looking for a kind of New York loft style wedding venue vibe, set in the heart of Derbyshire, this is the place to be folks!!
West Mill wedding photography is something we love – what a venue!! The building is also positioned in a superb setting on the riverbanks, resulting in beautiful views of the River Derwent. Inside, think barrel-vaulted ceilings, exposed brick walls, cast iron columns and beams. All a stone’s throw away from The Derwent river.

Here are a selection of photos taken at The West Mill – We flippin’ love it there!!
The Dressing Room
On the top floor of the building, next to the ceremony room is The Dressing Room. As guests are welcomed to The West Mill, the bride can enjoy some much-needed ‘me’ time and some pre-wedding pampering in The Dressing Room. With a vintage dressing table and chairs, armchairs and a chaise long for the ultimate in luxury, a full-length mirror and iPod dock for some pre-wedding music.
The wedding ceremony
A wedding venue with enough space for 160 guests. The Cotton Quarter on the top floor of the building has exposed brick walls. It also boasts original blue brick tiled floors, cast-iron beams and a unique cast iron ceiling create an atmospheric room filled with character. While guests wait for the all-important bride’s entrance, they can enjoy the stunning views of the river and the parkland of Darley Park. The ceremonies take place at the southern end of the room. This creates a beautiful natural light to create a breathtaking and romantic backdrop to your wedding ceremony.
The drinks reception & photos
After the ceremony, everyone will head downstairs to The Gallery on the ground floor for canapés & drinks. The room boasts great natural light. Super cool cast-iron columns and a polished concrete floor. Three sets of decadent Chesterfields dominate the room as well as traditional butler’s tables. There’s a gallery of vintage mirrors and traditional industrial decor. There is even a traditional post box for posting any wedding cards! This time is perfect for some wedding photos in the courtyard and down by the river.
Wedding breakfast
Upstairs, there’s seating for 160 guests. You can either sit on either trestle or more traditional circular tables under the barrel-vaulted brick arches which complement the blue brick floor. The exposed brickwork and Georgian paned windows create an almost dramatic yet romantic backdrop for your special day. This room is perfect for intimate weddings of around 50 family and friends. However, it can also comfortably sit up to 160 guests. The room has a flexible layout and had scope for several different settings.
The evening reception – The perfect place for evening wedding photography at The West Mill
Created specifically for the evening part of the reception. The Spinning Room has a unique reclaimed bar. Vintage Chesterfield armchairs and comfortable seating create a relaxed lounge area looking onto a dance floor. Mood lighting illuminates the cast-iron columns and brick arches. As a result, it creates the perfect backdrop to dance the night away.
