Wedding Photos at Lower Damgate Farm – A Charming, Animal-Loving Barn Wedding in the Peak District

Tucked between the River Dove and River Manifold in the heart of the Peak District, Lower Damgate Farm (also known as Dovedale Barn) isn’t just a wedding venue—it’s a whole weekend escape.  Lower Damgate Farm is one of those venues that feels like a little adventure all of its own. Hidden away in the heart of the Peak District, it’s got everything I love as a wedding photographer – wide open landscapes, a rustic barn with bags of character, and even a few alpacas and goats wandering around to keep things interesting! The owners there are lovely too, with an ethos of “nothing is a problem,” it’s the kind of place where couples can step off the usual path and create something uniquely theirs.

Mel & Nick chose to have their wedding there as the area held a special place in Mel’s heart. Regular visits growing up meant that there was no other place that she could invite all the friends and family to watch them get married. And it was sooo worth it – We had such a great day, despite the horrendous British weather.

A wedding for animal lovers

Nick and Mel had invited Lisa and Ben from BB Falconry to join us, along with 3 amazingly beautiful owls. It’s safe to say guests loved it! Then, as if the owls weren’t enough, we were joined by the whole herd of alpacas and goats in the evening. Once the rain finally stopped, we were able to head out into the fields with a handful of corn to go and see these lovable creatures. A total hit with the guests!

Thanks for inviting us along to be there to photograph your wedding – I LOVED hanging out with you all!

A little more about Lower Damgate Farm as a wedding Venue

What Makes It Special

  • Three-day weddings – The venue is hired from Friday to Monday, giving you time to set up, soak in the atmosphere, and unwind after the big moment. Damgate+2Bridebook+2

  • DIY with support – You’re free to bring your own caterers, musicians, and decorations. The venue provides staff on the day to keep things smooth (serving drinks, clearing up, etc.), so you’re not left scrambling. Damgate+2Bridebook+2

  • Animals on site – The farm is also a home to Dovedale Animal Sanctuary. Guests often meet or photograph with llamas, goats, alpacas, and other rescued animals (if you want!). Hitched+3Damgate+3Damgate+3

  • Licensed inside & out – The Dovedale Barn is licensed for civil ceremonies; if the skies hold, there’s even an outdoor field option with views stretching across the peaks. Damgate+3Hitched+3Damgate+3

  • Accommodation included – The wedding package includes cottages and barns to sleep your closest guests (30+ people), plus options for camping or staying in the “Alpaca Hut” honeymoon retreat

Lower Damgate Farm Wedding Photos – Creative Possibilities

  • Golden hour portraits in the fields, with long grass and soft evening light as well as a raised platform for epic sky photos.

  • Fun candid shots with guests hanging out in the courtyard or kids running around with the animals.

  • Atmospheric barn shots using fairy lights and rustic details for a cosy, intimate feel.

  • Late-night portraits under the stars or by the bonfir

Why It Works Beautifully for Modern, Creative Couples

Because Lower Damgate isn’t rigid, it naturally fits the modern, creative approach to wedding photography and weddings. You can style it with bold, personal touches. You can do casual, candid photos with animals or in fields. You’re not boxed into one look — the blank slate of the barn + wide grounds gives your photographer (and you) freedom to roam, try new portrait ideas, experiment with light, and capture authentic moments rather than stiff setups.

The animals, meadows, woodland paths, and upstairs bar area all become canvas for storytelling. Want a late-night bonfire shot? A sunset silhouette in the meadow? A photo with an alpaca? You got it!
