Lake District Wedding Photographer

One of the very best things about being a Lake District Wedding Photographer is that we get to travel to this simply stunning part of the UK. We are lucky enough to live not far from our own National Park, but there’s something truly special about the Lake District. I think it’s the connection to water combined with such a dramatic landscape! It’s one of our favourite places to visit for hiking and to photograph so if you are looking to get married here, please do get in touch and tell us all about your plans! There’s nothing better donning our walking boots and going for a hike the day after a wedding. Camera in hand with a couple of wide angle lenses to capture the epic scenery in all its glory.

Below we’ve included some of our favourite photos from previous weddings in Cumbria and The Lake District, we especially love the fact that they are so different from the wedding venues down here in Derbyshire. It really enables us to open up the wide lens and get those dramatic shots along with all the more intimate and natural, joyful moments of the wedding! Nothing looks better than all the bridesmaids and groomsmen laughing and having fun with the dramatic fells in the background. Or the bride and groom walking by the side of Derwent Water! LOVE IT!

The Lake District is a very special place

Located entirely within Cumbria, the Lake District was designated National Park status in 1951 and covers and area of 2,362km. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site and boasts the highest mountain in England – Scafell Pike at 978 metres above sea level. Amongst the many peaks, fells and moorlands are also some of the longest and deepest lakes in the UK – the lesser known Wast Water is actually the deepest, followed closely by the well visited Lake Windermere. Furthermore, it’s easily the most visited park in the country – when I looked it up it said there were 15.8 million annual visitors!! But it’s easy to see why!

The Lake District is famous for its lakes such as Windermere and Coniston, it’s mountains such as Scafell and Helvellyn but also for the famous people that have made this beautiful area their home. Beatrix Potter lived in Near Sawrey between Esthwaite Water and Windermere. Here she wrote her books and tended to many Herdwick sheep until her death in 1943 when she left all her land and property to the National Trust. William Wordsworth wrote a Guide to the Lakes in 1810 and his most famous poem “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”, was inspired by the sight of daffodils on the shores of Ullswater. There are also, of course, the hugely famous books by Alfred Wainwright, beautifully and carefully hand-drawn maps and panoramas, describing walking routes across 214 fells – still used today by many intrepid walkers.

It’s hard to list all the beautiful places to visit here, but on the must list is Windermere & Ambleside, Coniston, Ullswater, Langdale Valley, Derwentwater, Wast Water, Scafell, Grasmere – there’s so many.

The mountains & fells of The Lake District

We’ve been here a few times now and we always try to scale one of the many peaks. Most recently when we were in the area to photograph a wedding on the Lingholm Estate we walked up The Old Man of Coniston. It’s always a challenge but worth it to sit and eat cheese sandwiches at the very top looking over that view! The only things missing were the dogs, but we can’t bring them to a wedding!! Oh the chaos they would cause!! 😂 There are the Eastern, Southern and Northern Lakeland Fells, covered in woodland, mossy banks, heathered moorland, a scattering of hamlets and many isolated farmsteads.

Although this National Park is one of the most populated, there are only actually four major towns; Keswick, Windermere, Ambleside, and Bowness-on-Windermere. Significant towns immediately outside the boundary of the national park include Millom, Barrow-in-Furness, Kendal, Ulverston, Dalton-in-Furness, Cockermouth, Penrith. All providing ample wedding night accommodation.

Wedding venues of The Lake District

Needless to say, there are many beautiful wedding venues in the Lake District and people come from all over the country and indeed the world to get married here. And why not, there are so many opportunities here. Incredible landscapes and stunning backdrops for photography. We can grab a long focal length lens like an 85mm or 135mm and compress the scenery in the background and focus on the bride and groom, photographing at wide open apertures like f2, or maybe try a different composition and have them super small in the frame with the epic mountains in the background.

Why not take a Boat ride on one of the many lakes with cocktails and canapés for the wedding guests or just sitting by the waters edge with glass of champagne in hand – it just sounds so idyllic. I most enjoy a walk along a jetty, enjoy the peace and quiet and watch the water while the sun goes down – just a perfect spot for a bride and groom.

For those that love their food, you could choose to have your wedding ceremony at The Gilpin or The Samling restaurants, both of which have a Michelin star! If a waters edge venue is more up your street then try The Lingholm Estate (see a recent tipi wedding there: CLICK HERE ) or Storrs Hall. Tucked away a spectacular view is Askham Hall or the Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa.

Photography The Lake District

Now this place is heaven for the professional or amateur photographer,  whether you’re there as a landscape photographer or a portrait photographer, there’s something for everyone. Set your alarm super early and catch the sunrise on a slow shutter speed and tripod for something epic. Or maybe even throw in an ND filter in there to really add to the drama by reducing the exposure on the sky. We love to do our Connection Photoshoots at either sunrise or sunset as the light is so beautiful at that time of day.
