Iceland Elopement Wedding Photography
Iceland Wedding photography, to the max!
As an elopement wedding photographer, Iceland is one of those places that’s always been on my bucket list for photography. I’ve visited before for a pre-wedding photoshoot, but to have a bride and groom stand there in this epic landscape is amazing.
In case you’ve never been, Iceland is one of those truly special places to watch a couple elope and get married. The landscape is beautifully rugged and barren for a lot of the year and then all of a sudden in the Summer months, the purple Lupins spring to life and fill the horizon with colour.
The snowcapped Icelandic mountains make epic backdrops for stunning elopement photos and you can’t possibly visit Iceland for your wedding or elopement with your photographer without exploring the glaciers, black sand and iceberg lagoons.
Locations around Iceland
We headed to so many amazing places around Iceland for our elopement wedding photography shoot:
We started in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, for a few photos. Honestly, this is such a cool city. I wish we could have spent all day shooting images here. So many awesome textures of concrete, graffiti and colourful buildings, and of course the Hallgrímskirkja, Church of Iceland is a central focal point. Could you imagine getting married inside those amazingly big church doors and then coming out as husband and wife, ready for an Icelandic elopement adventure? How cool would that be?!!!
– The Black Diamond Beach. A black sand beach, jewelled with small Icebergs that have washed up on the beach.
– The black sandy beach at Vik. Vik doesn’t just boast a super unique-looking, red-roofed church called Reyniskirkja Church . It has a beautiful beach too. Amazing rocky outcrops and black volcanic sand glistens as the waves crash against the shore. To have a bride and groom walking along these sandy beaches in their wedding clothes is amazing. The contrast between a white wedding dress and the black sand is so cool, and makes awesome elopement wedding photos in Iceland. Completely unique.
Next up was the highlight of the trip… The Glacial Lagoon. Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon which borders the Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. We commandeered a jetty for our bride and groom to share their vows and promises with the aqua blue icy waters in the background. Giant icebergs floating past as they completed their Elopement. It was such a magical moment and one that will forever be a career highlight for me as an Iceland Elopement Wedding Photographer.
Chynna + Nick
Now I know this blog is a lot about Iceland, but I’d like to give a quick shout-out to Chynna and Nick who made all of this possible. Our amazing bride and groom all the way from Australia. They battled the dreaded covid a couple of years ago, rearranged everything and still managed to make this all work.
We lived and travelled together for 3 days and honestly I can say, it was the best 3 days we’ve had in ages!! Getting to know them was so special. They’re such a great couple and genuinely up for an adventure and did anything we asked. We asked them to stand in the rain on a freezing glacier…No problem. Climb on sheer rock faces in a dress…No worries. Eat questionable fermented Shark…easy! Nothing was a problem and I just wanted to say a huge heartfelt thank you to you both for bringing me to Iceland as your Elopement wedding photographer.
Elopement Day 2 – The Vow Exchange in Iceland
So, Chynna and Nick hadn’t exchanged their wows up until this point. We’d traveled for hours across the rocky terrain of Iceland, heading towards the Blue Lagoon for what hoped to be an amazing finish to the trip and the perfect place for these two to exchange their wedding vows and make their promises to each other.
As it turned out, it was better than we could have ever hoped for. Yeah, it was raining, it was chilly, but oh my god did we find the mother of all locations for an Iceland Wedding Elopement scene, and armed with a camera, we knew this would be the perfect spot for some photography.
So there you have it. One of the most beautiful and intimate Iceland elopements I think I’ve been a part of and I was lucky enough to be invited along with the camera to photograph the whole trip.
I’d also like to give a shout-out to Philip White. An amazing videographer who worked tirelessly alongside me on the trip to produce the most beautiful wedding video – Go and check out his video from the trip here – philipwhiteweddings.co.uk/iceland-wedding-video/
Here’s the guy in action – Total dude!
