Nottingham Contemporary wedding photos
A lot of people shy away from winter weddings – They’re often dark, cold, unpredictable and are extremely hard to photograph. However, we love them! There’s something exciting about not knowing what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it until you see the wedding in front of you. More often than not, you can drive to a sunny wedding, have a pretty good idea of what to expect and how you’re going to shoot the day. It’s nice and easy – you can have a bit of a plan all you have to worry about it making sure that everyone is having a great time and you get epic photos at the end. But December is different – you can never pre-plan anything. Pretty much everything has to be lit artificially as obviously, it’s dark. You have to be super quick with lighting as no one wants to stand around for ages while you figure out settings, and you’ve still got to make sure that everyone was having a great time. Thankfully, Fran and Rob took care of the last part for us. All their friends and family were awesome and everyone had an amazing evening!
Fran and Rob
So, Fran and Rob live in Shanghai and were married there a couple of years a go. It was a very small ceremony abroad however, so they wanted to come back home and celebrate with their friends and family, and pretty much have an awesome party!
They chose The Nottingham Contemporary for their 6pm ceremony and reception. A super cool art gallery in the middle of Nottingham. The gallery housed a couple of cool exhibitions that we were able to use. One of these was a pitch black corridor which had noises running through the walls. A little bit freaky when you’re taking pictures with your back to the wall and suddenly, something runs past you. It did however, lead on to what Marguerite Humeau (the artist) calls a “biological showroom” of elephants, engaged in an elaborate mourning ritual, which was gorgeous!
As it wasn’t an official ceremony, Fran and Rob were able to do what they wanted. Pretty damn cool and a great way of getting around the red tape of formal, wedding legalities. They had the ceremony lead by one of their friends and a couple of readings by other friends too. A really lovely and personal start to the evening.
After LOTS and lots and lots of confetti, a few photos and a bite to eat, we had some speeches and prizes. Rob and Fran had created some awards for various things like “latest RSVP”, “worst song on the wedding playlist”. Lots of laughs all round!! However, all of this really was a warm up for Rob’s best man’s speech, which was brilliant!
Following dinner, we took the opportunity to venture outside the Nottingham Contemporary for a couple of photos, close to the wedding venue. We didn’t stay out too long as it was pretty chilly and we could hear the band starting to play, so we headed back inside for lots of amazing dancing. It was an old school rock ‘n’ roll band, which was epic! I remember one couple on the dance floor (you know who you are!!) who gave it everything – they looked great!
Such a great evening and we had a blast – Fran and Rob, you guys are amazing, and we loved hanging out with all your friends and family, who are equally lovely!
